His works have been translated into every major language and are read more widely than those of other writers.
Shakespeare was born on 26th April 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon where he was brought up. He married Anne Hathaway when he was 18 and with whom he had three children: Susanna and twins Judith and Hamnet. At some time around 1589 he joined a theater company in London as an actor and began writing plays. Also Shakespeare became a part-owner of a playing company called the Lord Chamberlain’s Men, later known as a King’s Men. It was renamed after the death of Queen Elisabeth in 1603 when King James I who enjoyed watching Shakespeare’s plays awarded his company of actors a royal patent. His plays were very popular and he became a very rich man. In 1597 he bought the second-largest house in Stratford, New Place as his family house. In 1599 a partnership of company members built their own theater which they called the Globe. It was that time when almost all of his greatest plays were written.
In his later years he wrote just four plays and it seems to have spent more time in Stratford. Around 1613 at age 49 he retired to Stratford where he died three years later on 23rd April 1616.
If in his early years he wrote mainly comedies and histories, later he became writing tragedies such as Hamlet, Othello, Macbeth, and King Lear which considered some of the finest work in English. In spite of the fact that the authorship of some of his works is uncertain William Shakespeare remains highly popular today and his plays are constantly studied, performed and reinterpreted.
He was buried in the chancel of the Holy Trinity Church with the next epitaph into the stone:
Good friend, for Jesus’ sake forbear,
To dig the dust enclosed here.
Blessed be the man that spares these stones,
And cursed be he that moves my bones.
